El Paso Shootings 2nd Anniversary

The author spoke on a panel on the second anniversary of the shootings in El Paso, TX, sponsored by the Centre for the Analysis of the Radical Right, a London-based human rights group, regarding the threat that hate-based language about immigrants poses for Latinos and others when some people like the El Paso shooter act on the rhetoric: video here: Nativist Extremism Webinar.

Convening of Legal Service Providers

On May 6, 2021, the author was privileged to share insights from the book at a virtual, invitation-only convening of legal services providers cosponsored by the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights and the Illinois Funders Collaborative.

Overcoming Xenophobia

On April 27 the author joined Bob Worsley, former AZ GOP State Senator and author of “The Horseshoe Virus” to discuss the modern anti-immigrant movement’s origins, evolution, impact on current debates, and ways to address it at an online event sponsored by the Migrant Immigrant and Refugee Rights Alliance. 

Ending Violence Against Mexican American Communities Discussion

On January 21 at 7:00 PM Eastern/6:00 PM Central, the author joined Sylvia Acosta of the YWCA-El Paso and professor and author Roberto Rodriguez at the Mexican American Civil Rights Institute’s “Ending Violence Against Mexican American Communities” panel to discuss how current white nationalist and police violence against Latinos has deep roots in the American southwest. National Immigrant Integration Conference

The author spoke on a panel of immigrant rights leaders at National Immigrant Integration Conference Main Stage Plenary Session: “Essential Is All of Us: Rebuilding our Economy and Communities in the Age of Covid,” on December 9, 2020, discussing how immigrant restrictions in the safety net are rooted in structural racism. Facing Race Conference

On November 12 the author joined major civil rights leaders on the Main Stage to address participants at the biennial “Facing Race” Conference, where he addressed the systemic racism built into US immigration policy.

HOLA America: Book Virtual Discussion

On October 1, the Midwest-based multi-media company HOLA America, consulting firm Carmona Strategic Solutions, and the Iowa Chapter of the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) hosted a virtual conversation on the book, focusing on the roles played by LULAC, the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF), and UnidosUS (formerly the National Council of La Raza) played in shaping the last, historic round of immigration reforms. 17th Annual Immigration Law and Policy Conference

On September 21, 2020, the author was featured at the 17th Annual Immigration Law and Policy Conference sponsored by the Migration Policy Institute, the Catholic Legal Immigration Network, and Georgetown Law School speaking about the historical precedents for some of the Trump Administration’s executive actions on immigration. National Geographic: Blood on the Wall Panel Discussion

On September 20, the author joined award-winning documentary producer-directors Sebastian Junger and Nick Quested, LULAC CEO Sindy Benavides, former Mexican Ambassador to the US Arturo Sarukhan, former New York Times reporter Julia Preston, and ABC News White House Correspondent Cecilia Vega for a panel discussion following the world premiere of the upcoming National Geographic documentary Blood on the Wall. The film traces the roots of two intertwined phenomena – Mexican drug trafficking cartels and instability in Central America – that underlie the crisis at the US southern border.

Virtual Book Presentation & Chat

On August 27 at 1:00 PM EST, the Raza Development Fund, the nation’s largest Latino Community Development Financial Institution, hosted a virtual discussion about the book. To view the recording of the event, click here.

The Future Of Immigration Webcast

Author joined a star-studded cast of scholars, progressive leaders, activists, and Representatives Pramila Jayapal and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez for a rich (virtual) discussion on the future of progressive immigration policy on May 1. Sponsored by the City University of New York’s School of Labor and Urban Studies, the “Rethinking Immigration: Vision and Strategy for 2021 and Beyond” conference was a can’t-miss event for anyone interested in how this country stays true to its tradition as a nation of immigrants.
